OUR HISTORY

Welcome to Temple Shaarey Zedek! An affiliate of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, we are members of the Conservative Movement, which emphasizes traditional Jewish practices. Our synagogue programs include uplifting and spiritually motivating services, educational programming for both children and adults, social programs through active Sisterhood and Brotherhood sponsored events, and community awareness and outreach programs.

With an eye towards dignity and decorum, the past is honored and Jewish laws, customs and rituals are preserved. The uniqueness of Temple Shaarey Zedek is observed in its skillful blending of American modernity with loyalty to the Jewish past, preserving the integrity and beauty of both worlds.

We began in 1968 as a merger between two well-established Buffalo synagogues Temple Emanu-el and Temple Beth David Ner Israel. Both of these synagogues had their origin in Buffalo in the 1930’s. While our present name is relatively new, our background, structure, and heritage date back to an exciting time of expansion of Jewish communal life in the City of Buffalo.

Our congregation has a membership of over 500 families and individuals with over 2,000 people being served. People from all walks of life are included on our rolls, ranging from singles to young married to adult families to senior citizens.

This affords a harmonious blending of the rich heritage of the past with the updated ideas of the present.

We are located at 621 Getzville Road, near Hartford Road in Amherst, New York. In addition to being the site of a full round of daily, Shabbat and Holiday services, it is also the location of our religious school, social hall and administrative offices. Situated on a strategic site of over eleven acres and readily accessible from Sheridan Drive, Millersport Highway, and the Youngmann Expressway, this functional, all-brick structure is in the midst of the densely populated Amherst-Williamsville suburban area

Most of all, Temple Shaarey Zedek represents an extended family – a second home to our membership. In times of joy or in times of sorrow, Temple Shaarey Zedek celebrates life as a communal family. We hope that you will enjoy becoming a part of our family.

Shalom and Welcome to Temple Shaarey Zedek.
